Top Ten Books on My Fall TBR

I'm linking up with That Artsy Reader Girl for another Top Ten Tuesday.

It's time for planning another season of reading! I read everything on my Summer TBR list. Here are ten books I plan to read this fall. After going hard on queer love stories in the summer, I need a different mix of books in my life, so I have a split of fiction and nonfiction.
1. Black Buck by Mateo Askaripour
This is what my online book club is discussing in October. I am... not really a fan of satire, so I don't have super high hopes for this one, but maybe it will surprise me, and I'm sure it will be interesting to discuss!
2. Excuse Me, Sir! by Shaley Howard
Earlier this year I read an article by Howard and was reminded I'd seen her memoir around, as she's a local author. Not too long ago I had a lovely conversation with a friend who's also a more masc queer woman about our experiences getting comfortable with our preferred gender expressions, and I'm excited to see what Howard has to say about her own experience.
3. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Y'all, I still haven't read this book, despite it being on every list ever and being a movie and everything. This season is the time to finally check it out.
4. Mistakes Were Made (But Not by Me) by Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson
I love a good psychological deep dive! Yes, please explain to me all the weird ways my brain works and what I can do to be a better human in the world.
5. Monster by Walter Dean Myers
At this point I think this young adult book from 1999 can be considered a modern classic. I did not read it in school, but I'd like to read it now.
6. My Most Excellent Year by Steve Kluger
My own year has been kind of a mess, so I definitely chose the next few reads from the "sounds uplifting" tag on my might-want-to-read list. The other tags on this book inform me I may have chosen yet another queer romance, but at least I gave myself some variety this season!
7. Nothing to Fear by Julie McFadden
Here's another kind of nonfiction I love! I have a feeling that I probably heard McFadden on a podcast and that's how I got interested in her book on demystifying death. I think hospice is awesome and that the folks who work in it have a lot to share with the rest of us, so I'm excited to pick this one up.
8. Only Love Today by Rachel Mary Stafford
It appears this book of daily inspiration may be more heavily Christian than I realized when several Goodreads friends recommended it, but I'm cool with occasionally dipping my toe back into the world of Christian books as long as they don't come with a lot of cringy, narrow-minded assumptions. We shall see where this one falls!
9. Somewhere Beyond the Sea by T.J. Klune
I'm pretty sure I first heard about this from a Goodreads ad, but I immediately knew from the title and cover that it was a sequel to The House in the Cerulean Sea and went and put a hold on it. I don't plan to reread the first book, so hopefully it's the kind of sequel that gives you some time to get re-oriented to the world.
10. Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, PhD
This book pops back up on my radar on a regular basis, and I've now had it on my "priority read" shelf for quite a while, so I'm finally going to read it this fall!

What do you plan to read this fall?

Looking back:
One year ago I was reading: Project Hail Mary, The Sittaford Mystery, and Our Favorite Songs
Five years ago I was reading: Possession, Let's Pretend This Never Happened, and Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes
Ten years ago I was reading: The Souls of Black Folk, Family Matters, and More Than Serving Tea

Top Ten Books on My Fall TBR

I'm linking up with That Artsy Reader Girl for another Top Ten Tuesday.

It's time for another seasonal check-in! I finished nine of the ten books on my Summer TBR and I'm in the middle of the tenth now, so this is a totally fresh list going into fall!
1. Cultish by Amanda Montell
I've been interested in this exploration of cult-like groups every time I've heard about it since it came out in 2021, so I'm going to finally prioritize reading it this fall.
2. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
I'm very excited to fulfill a long-time dream to see Kingsolver in person when she comes here on her book tour next month. I don't think my hold on this book will come through before then, but I still want to read it, as it's received all kinds of praise. I'm glad that I read David Copperfield years ago so that I can recognize the parallels (one of the reasons I read classics!), though I hear it stands well on its own regardless.
3. Hazeldine, Volume One by Angie Bee
I don't know much about this one, but my best friend was at a friend's book signing when she saw Bee there doing a signing as well and thought I might like this queer Western story. I'm interested to give it a try!
4. Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy
This is another one I've heard about repeatedly since it came out in 2021, and I can always use another mystery/thriller to pull me in.
5. Our Favorite Songs by Anita Kelly
I keep saying that I want to read the next Moonlighters novella. Now is the time!
6. A Place to Hang the Moon by Kate Albus
Middle grade? Uplifting? That is what I need in my life right now.
7. Polysecure by Jessica Fern
This book has only been out for three years, but at this point it kind of feels like every other polyamorous person has read this book about attachment, trauma, and relationships. I've been on the holds list for a while now and should get to listen to it this fall.
8. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
I was meh about Weir's first blockbuster, The Martian, but I keep hearing about this one from all corners. I've been working through some slower books lately so I'd love to read something faster paced, which I think this one is.
9. The Sittaford Mystery by Agatha Christie
In my quest to read Christie's complete works, I've finished off all the works with recurring characters and am now on to her standalones. This is the first one!
10. This Is Not a Book About Benedict Cumberbatch by Tabitha Carvan
I was just telling someone the other day about this book about the power of fandoms, but I still haven't actually read it! It sounds both interesting and fun, so I want to pick it up this fall.

What do you plan to read this fall?

Looking back:
One year ago I was reading: The Dead and the Dark, A Queer History of the United States, and Zombies Ate My Homework
Five years ago I was reading: The Subtle Knife, Kindred, House of Leaves, and The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay
Ten years ago I was reading: How to Be a Woman

Top Ten Books on My Fall TBR

I'm linking up with That Artsy Reader Girl for another Top Ten Tuesday.

It's time to share our seasonal planned reads! I still have two books left over from my summer TBR list, so those are here along with another eight I plan to read this fall.
1. The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker
I've heard this book come up again and again, and as I was planning a gathering this summer for the first time since COVID, it occurred to me that I could use some guidance on how to make such an event as good as possible for my guests. Of course, the holds list for this book was extremely long, so it wasn't until now that I have a shot of getting to it within the season.
2. Burnout by Emily Nagoski and Amelia Nagoski
This is a carryover from summer. I'm still on the holds list but nearing the top!
3. Girls Auto Clinic Glove Box Guide by Patrice Banks
This is also a carryover, and I hadn't put a hold on the ebook at my library since the only copy wasn't checked out and I figured I'd check it out when I was ready to read it. Apparently I waited too long because my library no longer has that book via OverDrive, so I've had to put a hold on the hard copy now!
4. Greywaren by Maggie Stiefvater
Finally, the conclusion to the Dreamer Trilogy comes out next month! I literally checked my library's site every day until OverDrive added the audiobook as an option to recommend so I could recommend it and then be at the top of the list when they finally bought it, haha :D
5. The Heartstopper Yearbook by Alice Oseman
I'm a sucker for anything Heartstopper at this point, so I was excited to see that this book diving deep into the characters, their world, and the writing of the series would be coming out next month.
6. The Lazy Genius Way by Kendra Adachi
I've heard this recommended over and over again, and where I'm at in my life now, if there's any way I can better optimize or prioritize my time and energy so I'm not exhausted all the time, I'm here for it!
7. Matrix by Lauren Groff
The hype on this one hasn't died down, and reading another book recently that profiled Christian women going back to the 11th century made me even more interested to pick up this feminist novel about 12th century nuns.
8. Nick and Charlie by Alice Oseman
As I said — sucker for anything Heartstopper. I read This Winter this summer (ironic, yes, haha) and this is the next novella from that universe.
9. The Under Dog and Other Stories by Agatha Christie
My quest to read all of Agatha Christie's published works continues!
10. The Wright 3 by Blue Balliett
This book was recommended to me, but I had to read the first book in the series first, of course, because that's how I roll. It wasn't my favorite, but it was good enough that I'm interested to pick up this one still.

What do you plan to read this fall?

Looking back:
One year ago I was reading: Somebody's Daughter, The Space Mission Adventure, Information Dashboard Design, and The House of Broken Angels
Five years ago I was reading: Leviathan Wakes and Bleak House
Ten years ago I was reading: I Will Teach You to Be Rich

Top Ten Books on My Fall TBR

I'm linking up with That Artsy Reader Girl for another Top Ten Tuesday.

It's time to talk about what we plan to read this season! I read all but one of the books on my summer TBR list, which is repeated here for fall. Here's some of what I plan to read this fall!
1. Apples Never Fall by Liane Moriarty
So far Moriarty hasn't been able to live up to What Alice Forgot and Big Little Lies, but I keep reading everything new she writes anyway because it's still good even when it's not great.
2. Aristotle and Dante Dive Into the Waters of the World by Benjamin Alire Sáenz
I wasn't quite as obsessed with Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe as many people seemed to be, but I did enjoy it and look forward to reading the sequel!
3. Honey Girl by Morgan Rogers
This was a recommendation from my bibliologist, and I'm looking forward to reading it!
4. Know My Name by Chanel Miller
One of my book clubs picked this to discuss in October. It has unbelievably high ratings on Goodreads, so I've wanted to read it for quite some time.
5. The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side by Agatha Christie
I am continuing with the Miss Marple books, and this one is next!
6. The Natural Mother of the Child by Krys Malcolm Belc
This was another bibliologist recommendation for this quarter.
7. Pregnant Girl by Nicole Lynn Lewis
This is a holdover from summer that I didn't get to. Still looking forward to it!
8. A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers
I loved the Wayfarers series, and I'm very excited for this new series from Becky Chambers!
9. Rising from Ash by Jax Meyer
This was my final bibliologist recommendation for this quarter.
10. Wholehearted Faith by Rachel Held Evans
After Rachel's passing two and a half years ago, I didn't expect to see anything new from her, but this was what she was working on at the time of her death, which her friend and fellow author Jeff Chu combined with other unpublished writings to lovingly craft this final publication.

What do you plan to read this fall?

Looking back:
One year ago I was reading: The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rebecca
Five years ago I was reading: Peril at End House, The Master and Margarita, and The Guns of August
Ten years ago I was reading: Thirteen Strategies to Measure College Teaching and The Emperor of All Maladies

Top Ten Books on My Fall TBR

I'm linking up with That Artsy Reader Girl for another Top Ten Tuesday.

First, looking back: I successfully read all the books on my summer TBR list. Now here's what I plan to read this fall!

1. Ace by Angela Chen
This just came out last week and I'm excited to read it! I read a lot of LGBTQIA+ books, but I hadn't ever seen a comprehensive nonfiction work specifically on asexuality. The reviews I've seen so far are great.

2. Cinder by Marissa Meyer
This is one of the books on my original to-read list that I'm hoping to finally get to this fall.

3. A Fatal Grace by Louise Penny
Even though I was meh about the first Inspector Gamache book, I've heard the rest of the series gets better, so I plan to keep going with this second book.

4. Girls with Sharp Sticks by Suzanne Young
Every year I set a goal to read something my sister recommends, and this is what she suggested this year!

5. Sabriel by Garth Nix
This is a classic book I see recommended again and again but have never read. When I saw the audiobook was narrated by Tim Curry, though, I realized this would be a good one to count toward my goal of listening to classic books read by celebrities!

6. Strangers from a Different Shore by Ronald Takaki
This is another one from my original to-read list. After I watched the PBS series on Asian Americans this summer, I wanted to make this one a priority. I recommended that my library buy the audiobook, and just this past week they did!

7. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
It's been years since I read this book, which I think I read for the first and only time in middle school, and since I keep writing on here about how I don't understand why it's held up as The Classic American Book, I figured I should revisit it. I got an audio version that's ready by Sissy Spacek as part of my goal to listen to classics narrated by celebrities!

8. Truth & Beauty by Ann Patchett
This is my local book club's selection for November/December, for the theme of "friendship."

9. The Tuesday Club Murders by Agatha Christie
Another 2020 goal was to start the Miss Marple books, which I did — I read the first one — but it took me a long time to get around to the second one because the list I had of all the books in publication order had this book under a different title and I couldn't find it. Now I should be getting my copy from the library soon!

10. The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
This is my online book club's next pick. The holds list for every format at the library is months long, so I will probably end up using an audiobooks.com free trial for this one.

What do you plan to read this fall?

Looking back:
One year ago I was reading: Possession, Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes, and Let's Pretend This Never Happened
Five years ago I was reading: The Maze Runner, Number the Stars, and Uncle Tom's Cabin
Ten years ago I was reading: You're Wearing That?
